On the basis of size and storage capacity, computers can be divide into following four types -

➤Micro computer

➤Mini computer.

➤Main frame computers

➤ Super computers.

⦿ Micro computer is a small computer and is mainly used in homes, schools, offices and shops. Major features of micro computers are-

① It is small in size.

② It uses a microprocessor as is CPU.

③ it is generally designed for personal use, so it is also known as PC i.e Personal computer.

④ Its power consumption is quite low and thus it remains cool.

⑤ It is generally single user, but can be made multi user to support 2-3 terminals.

⑥ It can process few million bytes per second.

▶ Some examples of Micro computers are : IBM PC, Commodore 64
Micro computers are given different names such as Desktop computer, laptop and PDA depending upon their usage.

✿ Desktop computers
These computers are small in size. These are termed as desktop computers since these can be easily placed on the top of a desk. These are not portable and cannot be operated on battery.

✿ Laptop computers
These computers are smaller in size. These are termed as laptop computers since these can be easily placed on lap. These are easily portable and can be operated on battery. So these can be used anywhere easily while traveling.

✿PDA computers
PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant. These computers are quite small in size. They are also termed as palmtop since they can easily be placed on the palm. These are easily portable and can be operated on battery. These are generally less powerful than desktop and laptop computers. These are quite easy to carry and can be used anywhere easily while traveling.

① It is faster than micro computers but slower than main frame computers.

② It uses Microprocessor in CPU for both storage as well as manipulation of data.

③ It is a multi user and can support up to 20 terminals.

④ Its maximum speed is few billion bytes per second.

▶ Some common examples of mini computers are : PDP-5, PDP-8.

① It is very powerful, expensive and multiprocessor computer.

② It is large in size with large memory and high speed.

③ It is a multi user system and can support up to 100 terminals. It can have large on-line secondary storage capacity and can support variety of peripheral devices like magnetic taps divers, hard disk drive etc.

④ Its power consumption is quite high and it needs cooling.

⑤ It is quite suitable for banking, on-line ticketing reservation and stock exchange applications.

▶ Some common super computers are : PDP-10, IBM Z series.

④ Its power consumption is quite high and it needs cooling.

⑤ It is quite suitable for weather forecasting, space research, satellite control, defense and real-time applications.

▶ Some common Super computers are : CRAY3, PARAM 1000
