The mitochondria provides energy for the cell. They are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they provide the location for the production of ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate). ATP is produced by aerobic respiration such as glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and electron transport. ATP in turn provides energy for the cell at the molecular level.

Answer:
Mitochondria (singular : mitochondrion; mito : thread, chondrion : granule) are going in all anerobic eukaryotes and absent in mammalian red blood cells, anaerobic protozoans and prokaryotes.
Following are some functions of mitochondria :
- Mitochondria are the sites of cellular respiration.
- They are minute biochemical factories where molecules, such as glucose, proteins, days or lipids, are oxidized into CO2 and H2O by using oxygen. The energy released which is stored in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) molecules.
- The ATP synthesized inside mitochondria provides energy for all cellular activities. Hence, mitochondria are also known as powerhouse of the cell.
- They help in the synthesis of several biochemical like cytochromes, steroids, fatty acids, chlorophyll and phospholipids.
