Inertia is the tendency of all matter to remain at rest or in motion until acted on by a force. Moment of inertia is a measure of an object's rotary inertia, or its tendency to resist increasing or decreasing rotation about some axis. Inertia is related only to mass, but moment of inertia is related also to distribution of mass. Mass far away from the axis of rotation increases moment of inertia more than the same mass near the axis of rotation.
