Motion can be defined as the change in position of an object with respect to its surroundings in a given interval of time. Motion can be seen in each and every activity of our life. In other words, whenever a body is moving, we say it is in motion. For example, if a boy is walking down the street from his school to his home, we will say that the boy is in motion.
Types of motion
According to the nature of the movement, motion is classified into the following types
- Translational – In this type of motion an object moves along a path in any of the three dimensions.
- Rotational – In this type of motion an object moves along a circular path about a fixed axis.
- Linear – It is a type of translational motion where the body moves in a unique direction along a single dimension.
- Periodic – It is the type of motion that repeats itself after regular intervals of time
- Simple Harmonic – It is the type of motion like that of a simple pendulum where a restoring force acts in the direction opposite to the direction of motion of the object.
- Projectile – In this type of motion, it has a horizontal displacement as well as vertical displacement.
- Oscillatory – The motion which is repetitive in nature within a time frame. If it is mechanical in nature it is called vibration.
