Mouth: The opening and cavity in the lower part of the human face, surrounded by the lips, through which food is taken in and vocal sounds are emitted.

Buccal cavity: the beginning of the alimentary canal, which leads to the pharynx and (in vertebrates) to the oesophagus.

Tongue: fleshy muscular organ in the mouth of a mammal, used for tasting, licking, swallowing, and (in humans) articulating speech.

Diaphragm: dome-shaped muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs.

Liver: large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates, involved in many metabolic processes.

Gall bladder: small sac-shaped organ beneath the liver, in which bile is stored after secretion by the liver and before release into the intestine.

Stomach: internal organ in which the major part of the digestion of food occurs, being (in humans and many mammals) a pear-shaped enlargement of the alimentary canal linking the oesophagus to the small intestine.

Bile duct: the duct which conveys bile from the liver and the gall bladder to the duodenum.

Pancreas: large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum. Embedded in the pancreas are the islets of Langerhans, which secrete into the blood the hormones insulin and glucagon.

Small intestine: part of the intestine that runs between the stomach and the large intestine; the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum collectively.

Large intestine: the caecum, colon, and rectum collectively.

Anus: opening at the end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste matter leaves the body.

Rectum: final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus.

Duodenum: first part of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach, leading to the jejunum.

Salivary Glands: any of various glands that discharge a fluid secretion and especially saliva into the mouth cavity and that in humans comprise large compound racemose glands including the parotid glands, the sublingual glands, and the submandibular glands.
