A neutral solution is one which has an equal concentration of [H^+] and [OH^-] ions in the solution.

At a temperature of 25degC/298K, this would be at a pH of 7.

However, this value changes at different temperatures as the Kw of water is (1.0 x 10^14)mol^2dm^-6 at that temperature only.

For example, at a temperature of 50degC/323K, the Kw of water is (5.476 x 10^-14)mol^2dm^-6. Hence, [H^+] = Square root (5.476 x 10^-14) = (2.34 x 10^-7)moldm^-3. So, pH = -log(2.34 x 10^-7) = 6.63 (3 s.f.). Neutral pH at a temperature of 50degC/323K will thus be at a pH of 6.63, and not 7.
