The niche of an organism is the functional role that it plays within an ecosystem.

The niche of an organism within an ecosystem depends on how the organism responds and reacts to the distribution and abundance of these factors, and in turn how it alters the factors. For example, when resources are abundant, a population grows, although by growing, the population provides more resources for predators.

A niche refers to the way in which an organism fits into an ecological community or ecosystem. Through the process of natural selection, a niche is the evolutionary result of a species morphological (morphology refers to an organisms physical structure), physiological, and behavioral adaptations to its surroundings.

Based on the interactions of species with the physical and biological world, niches are of three types; spatial or habitat niche, trophic niche, and multidimensional niche. The spatial or habitat niche is the physical area within the habitat that a species occupies.
