NIJ cultivation was a land settlement between the planters and the Ryots or cultivator. In this system Ryots are bound to a bond to undertake a particular crop. It is also known as Zerat cultivation. This Nij cultivation was adopted by British planters in Bengal and Bihar to cultivate Indigo during 1850s. After Indigo revolt in 1858 it has been declined in Bengal.
