Answer:

The nitrogen cycle is the biogeochemical cycle by which nitrogen is converted into multiple chemical forms as it circulates among atmosphere, terrestrial, and marine ecosystems. The conversion of nitrogen can be carried out through both biological and physical processes. Important processes in the nitrogen cycle include fixation, ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification. The majority of Earth's atmosphere (78%) is atmosphere nitrogen,[16] making it the largest source of nitrogen. However, atmospheric nitrogen has limited availability for biological use, leading to a scarcity of usable nitrogen in many types of ecosystems.

Hey pretty stranger!

Question:

Define nitrogen cycle.

Answer:

The cyclic process by which nitrogen element is circulated continuously through the living and non-living components of the biosphere is called nitrogen cycle.

It has 3 steps-

  • Nitrogen fixation
  • Nitrogen assimilation
  • Dentrification

[ ._. Let's know about them in brief.]

Nitrogen fixation:

As we know that atmospheric nitrogen can't be used by plants and animals directly, therefore it needs to get converted to nitrogenous compounds. This process is called nitrogen fixation.

NITROGEN FIXATION CAN OCCUR IN TWO WAYS-

  • Biological nitrogen fixation

  • In this, nitrogen gas in air goes in the root nodules of leguminous plants where Rhizobium bacteria convert nitrogen to ammonia ( NH3) and then nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to nitrites and nitrates.

  • Atmospheric nitrogen fixation

._. Nitrogen fixation can also occur by lightening strikes.

  • During lightening in the sky when temperature is high, the nitrogen gas present in the atmosphere reacts with oxygen to form oxides of nitrogen which gets dissolved in rainwater forming dilute nitric acid.
  • This reacts with alkalies of soil to form nitrates.
  • Then, this nitrates namaste is taken by plants from the soil to make protien.

[ In both case nitrates formed at last.]

Nitrogen assimilation

  • As the plants use these nitrates to mske protiens. Animals eat plants to get protiens.

  • Dead plants and animal excreta contain nitrogenous wastes. Overtime these wastes decay and Ammonia is released.

  • And then again it converted to nitrates by Nitrifying bacteria.

  • This process is called nitrogen assimilation.

Dentrification

  • Dentrifying bacteria again convert nitrates back to atmospheric nitrogen.
  • Nitrogen gas goes baxk to air. This process is called dentrification.
