the force acting on a area perpendicularly is know as normal force. or the force that is normal ( perpendicular) to a surface is known as normal force.

normal force is not equal to friction as friction acts parallel (but in opposite direction) to a surface. normal force is equal to weight of a body. example is a wooden block moving horizontally on a surface with normal force ( weight downward)
