Noun:

The name of a person,place,thing or animal is called noun.

or

Any naming word is called noun

Example: Ali,school,Pakistan,cat,pen,car,etc

KINDS OF NOUN:

1) Common noun:

Used to name people,places,things in GENERAL.It refers to the class or type of person or thing ( without being specific).

Example : girl,city,school,house,food,colour etc.

Proper noun:

Used to name a SPECIFIC person,place or thing.Proper nouns begin with a capital letter.

Example: John,london,oxford school,red colour etc

Abstract noun:

Have no physical existence.They refer to ideas,emotions and concepts you cannot see, touch, smell or taste.

Example: Love,time,fear,freedom etc.

Compound noun:

Two or more words that create a noun.They can be written as one word, joined by a hypen or written as separate words.

Example: rainfall, son - in - law, credit card etc.

Countable noun:

Have a singular and a plural form and can be used with a number or a/an before it. They are sometimes called count nouns.

Example: car,desk,cup,door etc

Uncountable noun:

Cannot be counted. They often refer to substances,liquids and abstract ideas. They are sometime called mass noun.

Examples: wood, milk,air,water etc.

Collective noun:

Refer to a set or group of peoples,things and animals. They are often followed by

OF + plural noun (example: bunch of flowers).

Examples:

team, pile,stack,colon etc.

Material noun:

It refers to a material or substance from which things are made.

Examples:

Kinds of Nouns

There are five kinds of Nouns:

  1. Proper Nouns :- India, Lucknow, Yamuna, Raman
  2. Common Noun :- boy, girl, person, city, river
  3. Collective Nouns :- army, class, navy, flock, family
  4. Material Nouns :- gold, silver, aluminium, milk, sugar

1. Proper Nouns

A Proper Noun always begins with a Capital Letter.

  • A Proper Noun is the name of a particular person, place or a thing.

Note: Proper Nouns include the names of people, countries, cities, towns, villages, rivers, ships, streets, buildings, mountains, seas, months of the year, days of the week, festivals, etc.

2. Common noun:-

A noun which doesn't point out any particular person, place or thing but it is common to all persons or things of the same class or kind is called a Common Noun.

For example:- boy, girl, person, city, river

3. Collective Nouns

A Collective Noun is the name of a collection of persons or things taken together and spoken of as one whole.

For example,

  1. The word bunch stands for a collection of keys.
  2. The word class stands for a collection of students.
  3. The word team stands for a collection of players.

4. Material Nouns

A Noun which stands for the matter or substance of which things are made of is called a Material Noun

Examples: iron, silver, gold, sugar, milk, cotton, wood, etc.

5. Abstract Nouns

An Abstract Noun is the name of a quality, feeling or idea that we can only think of or feel but cannot touch or see.

Words like heat, beauty, wisdom, truth, love, anger, height, depth, etc. are Abstract Nouns.

  • We can feel heat, but we cannot touch or see it; what we touch or see is a hot object and not heat. Similarly, we can think of love but cannot see or touch love
