According to this atoms can combine either by transfer of valence electron from one atom to another or by sharing of valence electron in order to make octet in their valence shells . This know as octet rule

According to this rule, Two atoms are bonding with each other in order to complete eight electrons(octet) except Hydrogen which complete two electrons(duplet).
