The society of France before 17th century is known as Old regime.

The society was divided into three groups or estates.The three estates were -

1 . First estate:

*It consisted of Clergy.

*The clergy were people related to church. For example- priests

*They were given special privileges like collection of tax called tithe, holding land etc .

* They were exempted from paying taxes.

2. Second estate:

* It consisted of nobility.

* The nobility were people like ministers and government officials.

* They were given special privileges like collection of tax called taille which was a direct tax .

* They were exempted from paying taxes

3. Third estate:

* This estate consisted of common people.

* They had no privileges.

*They did not possess land.

* They paid all the tax
