Olfactory means 'a sense of smell'. Olfactory indicators are those which change their smell upon reaction with an acid or base. They are different from methyl orange or litmus as these solutions change their colour when they react with an acid or base whereas olfactory indicators show a decrease in smell upon reaction with a base, but with acids , the smell remains as it is.

Examples: Vanilla, Onion and Clove.
