Opening and closing of stomata takes place due to change in turgor pressure of guard cells.

Stomata opens when required, during gaseous exchange.

The opening and closing of stomatal pores is a function of the guard cells. The guard cells swell when water flows into them causing stomatal pores to open.

Similarly, the pores close if the guard cells shrink. As large amount of water is lost through these stomata, the plant closes these pores when it doesn't require Co2 for photosynthesis.
