Explanation:

Osmosis is a type of diffusion that, in biology, is usually related to cells. Diffusion is when molecules or atoms move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Osmosis is when a substance crosses a semipermeable membrane in order to balance the concentrations of another substance. In biology, this is usually when a solvent such as water flows into or out of a cell depending on the concentration of a solute such as salt. Osmosis happens spontaneously and without any energy on the part of the cell..

hope this helps you

Answer:

Osmosis can be defined as the diffusion of water or solvent across semipermeable membrane from the region of it's higher concentration to the region of it's lower Concentration.

Explanation:

Plasma membrane function as semipermeable membrane.

Example of osmosis

1. absorption of water by plants

2. absorption of water by unicellular freshwater organisms

Types of osmosis

1. Endosmosis

2. Exosmosis

1. Endosmosis-- Endosmosis is the osmotic entry of water into a cell or system.

2. Exosmosis-- Exosmosis is the osmotic withdrawal of water from a cell or system.

ACTIVITY TO DEMONSTRATION OF ENDOSMOSIS AND EXOSMOSIS

Method

Put dry raisins or apricots in a petri dish having plain water. Observe after about 30 minutes.

Observation

Raisins or apricots swell up due to endosmosis. Some Swollen raisins can be placed in concentrated sugar or salt solution. After sometime the raisins will shrink to previous form. It is due to Exosmosis.

ANOTHER ACTIVITY FOR DEMONSTRATION OF ENDOSMOSIS AND EXOSMOSIS

Aim - demonstration of endosmosis and exosmosis

Method - deep two equal sized raw eggs in dilute hydrochloric acid for an hour or so. The cells made up of calcium carbonate get dissolved was the two eggs with water two - three times. Each egg is now surrounded by semipermeable membrane. Place one in water and the other in concentrated salt solution absorb after 1 hour.

Observation - the egg placed in water swells up because of endosmosis and the egg placed in salt solution shrinks due to exosmosis.
