Answer:

Osmosis is the movement of a solvent across a semipermeable membrane toward a higher concentration of solute (lower concentration of solvent). In biological systems, the solvent is typically water, but osmosis can occur in other liquids, supercritical liquids, and even gases.

Osmosis is the passage of water form a region of higher water concentration to the lower water concentration, though a semi permiable membrane.

Based on concentration of sugar and salt solution in water, it is classified into 3 types.

Hypotonic solution :-

In hypotonic solution, when the concentration of water is higher outside the cell then inside, the cell will swell up.

Hypertonic solution :-

In hypertonic solution, when the concentration of water is higher inside the cell then of outside, water will come out. As a result the cell will shrink.

Isotonic solution :-

In an isotonic solution, when the concentration of water is equal both inside and outside the cell, then there is no net movement of water.
