Define osmosis........
Answers
Answer:
Osmosis is the movement of a solvent across a semipermeable membrane toward a higher concentration of solute (lower concentration of solvent). In biological systems, the solvent is typically water, but osmosis can occur in other liquids, supercritical liquids, and even gases.
➽ Osmosis is the passage of water form a region of higher water concentration to the lower water concentration, though a semi permiable membrane.
➽ Based on concentration of sugar and salt solution in water, it is classified into 3 types.
➽ Hypotonic solution :-
In hypotonic solution, when the concentration of water is higher outside the cell then inside, the cell will swell up.
➽ Hypertonic solution :-
In hypertonic solution, when the concentration of water is higher inside the cell then of outside, water will come out. As a result the cell will shrink.
➽ Isotonic solution :-
In an isotonic solution, when the concentration of water is equal both inside and outside the cell, then there is no net movement of water.
