Osmosis (/ɒzˈmoʊ. sɪs/) is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a selectively permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides.

Define Osmosis.

Answer
The process in which water passes from a higher concentration area to a lower concentration area through a semi-permeable membrane (cell membrane/plasma membrane) is known as Osmosis.
We can classify osmosis into two categories -:
- Endosmosis → When water is more in the surrounding medium than in the cells, the water enters the cell from the surrounding medium, such osmosis is known as endosmosis.
- Exosmosis → When water is more in the cell than in the surrounding medium, the water exits the cell to the surrounding medium, such osmosis is known as exosmosis.
We have three types of solutions. They are -:
1. Hypertonic Solution -:
- A solution in which the surrounding medium of the cell has a lower concentration of water compared to the cell is known as a hypertonic solution.
- The cell shrinks in such a solution because exosmosis occurs and the water from the cell (higher concentration) moves to the surrounding medium (lower concentration).
- The cell becomes what is to be known as a plasmolyzed cell.
2. Hypotonic Solution -:
- A solution in which the surrounding medium of the cell has a higher concentration of water compared to the cell is known as a hypotonic solution.
- The cell expands in such a solution because endosmosis occurs and the water from the surrounding medium (higher concentration) moves to the cell (lower concentration).
- The cell becomes what is to be known as a turgid cell.
3. Isotonic Solution -:
- A solution in which the surrounding medium of the cell and the cell has the same amount of water concentration is known as an isotonic solution.
- The cell size remains the same and the water enters and exits the cell in equal amounts.
