when an object has more water or gas molecules in it than the other object. An exchange of molecules takes place. this exchange is called osmosis.
ex. if you put a raisin in water, it will swell after sometime. this is because the raisin contained lesser water molecules than the water so the molecules in the water shifted to the raisin
