The oxygen dissociation curve is a sigmoidal graph showing the percentage saturation of haemoglobin at various partial pressures of oxygen. The curve shows the equilibrium of oxyhaemoglobin with haemoglobin at various partial pressures. In the lungs, the partial pressure of oxygen is high. So, haemoglobin binds to oxygen and forms oxyhaemoglobin. On the other hand, in the tissues, the oxygen concentration is low. So, oxyhaemoglobin releases oxygen to form haemoglobin.

The sigmoid shape of the dissociation curve is due to the nature of the binding of oxygen to haemoglobin. As the first oxygen molecule binds to haemoglobin, it increases the affinity for the second molecule of oxygen to bind. Subsequently, haemoglobin attracts more oxygen. At one point, hemoglobin gets saturated with oxygen, and at this point the curve plateus off.

0xygen Cycle➫ The process by which oxygen released into the atmosphere by photosynthetic organisms.

♦ Oxygen is an element that is very important to living organisms.

♦ The main source of atmospheric free oxygen is photosynthesis

♦ It is created and used in different ways.

♦ The quantity of oxygen is 20.95% in the atmosphere which is maintained by oxygen cycle.

♦ The oxygen cycle is often interconnected with the carbon cycle because carbon and oxygen are often combined together in a molecule.

➧ 0xygen cycles has four main reservoirs:-

❱ The Atmosphere
❱ The Hydrosphere
❱ The Lithosphere
❱ The Biosphere

➧ How 0xygen produced:-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=⤵

[1] Plants create the majority of the oxygen we breathe through a process called photosynthesis.

[2] In this process plants use carbon dioxide, sunlight & water to create energy.

[3] In the process they also create oxygen which they release into the air.

➧ Importance of 0xygen:-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=⤵

❱ It helps move oxygen through the three main regions of the Earth.

❱ To break down sugar to produce ATP or adenosine triphosphate.

❱ To help someone who cannot breathe by providing them with oxygen.
