Partisanship in politics is a complete devotion to a particular political party or ideology. Certain elected officials and their supporters will often display a resolute devotion to core ideas that define their party or ideology. Democrats/Liberals are often resolutely pro-choice; Republicans/Conservatives are often resolutely pro-life. Democrats - group rights; Republicans - individual rights. And so forth.

Partisanship can be a positive thing because it lets voters know where a party stands on a particular issue. It signals to voters that the party will not waffle or fold in its support for that issue and they can be counted on to vote a certain way. This offers a means of predictability in the electorate and a base of support for values they hold dear.

Partisanship can become a problem, however, because it opens the potential for political gridlock, hostility between parties, and hypocrisy among elected officials.

If a political partisan believes they have a strong base of support, then they are not motivated to compromise on their stance on an issue. With the electorate rather evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, neither party believes there is a need for compromise on key issues because they believe their base of support outweighs that of their opponent. This is why we see no movement on major issues like the debt, immigration, or entitlement spending.

This, in turn, has caused the parties to become more hostile with one another with accusations of corruption, anti-Americanism, and other unpleasant things. With this hostility comes a lack of trust, and a lack of willingness to work together to solve common problems.

It has been said, and rightly so, that politics is a practical profession. No one in politics should be under any allusion that they will get everything that they want. They must learn the art of compromise if they hope to achieve anything. Otherwise, issues that need attention just continue to fester until they reach a crisis point where solutions become needlessly painful for citizens.
