In German, it means 'potential hydrogenii', I.e the power of of hydrogen ions. Since the hydrogen ion of a solution determines its acidity, therefore, to determine this concentration pH scale is used. This scale runs between 0 which represents a very alkaline solution while 7 is the neutral point. The scale was defined by Sorensen in 1909. According to him, 'pH is the negative logarithm (base 10) of the hydrogen ion concentration in molecules per litre'.
