Let we have the two waves namely $Y_{1}$  and  $Y_{2}$

$Y_{1} = sin(\varpi t)$................(1)

$Y_{2} = sin(\varpi t+\phi)$..............(2)

Here $\phi$ is the phase.

First wave have zero phase angle.

Second wave have $\phi$  phase angle,means with respect to the first wave the initial position of the second wave makes an angle of $\phi$.

Phase angle is generally used for the comparison between two waves.
