Phase Rule: According to the phase rule, "If the equilibrium between any number of phases is not affected by gravity, electrical, magnetic, or surface action but is only affected by temperature, pressure, and concentration, then the number of degrees of freedom (F) of the system is related to the number of components (C) and number of phases (P) by the following phase rule equation:

F = C – P + 2

  • F ⇒ The degree of freedom is represented by F.
  • C ⇒ The numbers of the chemical components are denoted by C.
  • P ⇒ The phase types in a certain system are indicated by P.
