Define pollination. Explain the different types of pollination. List two agents of pollination? How does suitable pollination lead to fertilization?
Answers
Answer:
Pollination : The transfer of pollen from the anther of the stamem to the stigma of the pistil with the helps of air , water , birds and insects .
Types of Pollination are :
- Self-Pollination : Transfer of pollen grain from the anther of the stamen to the stigma of the same flower .
- Cross-Pollination : Transfer of pollen grain from the anther of one flower to the stigma of other flowers of the same species .
◇ Two agents of pollination are air, water, insects etc.
=> When correct species of pollen grain lands on the stigma it results in some chemical response from the ovary that causes the growth of pollen tube from pollen grain. The pollen grain slides down the pollen tube and enters the ovary where it meets the egg. This process is called as fertilization and leads to the formation of zygote.
The transfer of pollen grains from the anther of the stamen to the receptive stigma of the carpet is called pollination.
Depending upon the source of pollen grains, pollination is of three types:
Autogamy- It is the kind of pollination achieved within the same flower.
it has two types-
cleistogamous flowers and chasmogamous flowers
Geitonogamy- it is the kind of self- pollination where the pollen grains from the anther of a flower are transferred to the stomach of another flower.
xenogamy it involves the transfer ofpollen grains from the anther of one part plant to the stigma of another plant.
The two agents of pollination are:
Abiotic - Hydrophily
Biotic - Zoophily
Suitable pollination lead to fertilisation by pollen pistil interaction method.
