This response to gravity is calledgeotropism, or gravitropism. The roots are exhibiting positive geotropism, or growth with gravity, while the stem is exhibiting negative geotropism, or growth against gravity. Different parts of a plant grow in opposite directions because they have different functions

Positive Geotropism means growth of the plants towards the Gravitational force.It is positive geotropism. Negative Geotropism means growth of the plant against the Gravitational force. e.g. When a plant's steam grows towards sunlight. It is called negative Geotropism.
