Potential Energy

\underline{Definition:}
The Energy Possessed by a body by virtue of it's motion is called as Potential Energy

The Stored Energy of Position possessed by an object is called Potential Energy.

\underline{Derivation}

Consider an object of Mass 'm' raised from the ground to height 'h'

Let w be the work done on the object against gravity

We have ,
Work done, W = force × displacement
& Force F = mg

Work done, W  = mg × h  = mgh

Which Means,
An energy equal  to mgh units is gained by the object . This is the potential energy (Ep) of the object.

Potential Energy Ep= mgh
(g = Acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s)

Ep depends on :
• Mass of the object
• Height of the object from Ground

• The potential energy and the mass of an object are directly proportional to each other.

- Heavy objects have greater potential Energy.

• Also the Gravitational potential energy and the height of an object are directly proportional to each other.

-The higher that an object is raised, the greater the gravitational potential energy.
