Answer:

The energy possessed by a body due to its position or configuration is called potential energy.

Consider a body of mass ‘m’ lying on the surface of the earth. Force required to lift the body is equal to its weight

∴F=mg

Let it be lifted through a height ‘h’,

The work done on the body is W=FS

W=mgh(∵S=h)

This work done is stored in the body as its potential energy,

∴E

p

=mgh

i.e. Gravitational potential energy =mgh

Its unit is Joule.

Answer:

Energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position is called potential energy. But, F = mg, the weight of the bod

Explanation:

Since the force required to lift it is equal to its weight, it follows that the gravitational potential energy is equal to its weight times the height to which it is lifted. PE = kg x 9.8 m/s2 x m = joules.Gravitational potential energy is due to the position of an object above Earth's surface. The object has the potential to fall due to gravity. Gravitational potential energy depends on an object's weight and its height above the ground (GPE = weight x height). Elastic potential energy is due to an object's shape
