Definition :- In poynting ' s original paper and in many textbooks , the poynting vector is defined as :-
S = E × H
E is electric field vector ,
H is the magnetic fields auxillary field vector .
This expression is often called the Abraham form . The poynting vector is usually denoted as S or N .
Significance :- In an electromagnetic field the flow of energy is given by the poynting vector .
For example :- the electromagnetic wave , this vector is in the direction of propagation and accounts for radiation pressure .
