look at the figure of a torch show above

there are two cells inside the torch . when you push the switch, energy from the cell makes the light up. the switch completes the circuit show that the current can flow round to the bulb.

the circuits inside the torch connects the cell, bulb and switch. the current flows through all component, in turn, so we call it a series circuit.
