Spontaneous combustion occurs when there is no outside heat source to start the combustion, such as an existent flame, an iron bar heated above the flammable temperature of the fuel, possibly a spark. The classic case for spontaneous combustion is a pile of oily rags piled loosely in a corner.

Rapid combustion is just that - a fire that burns quickly such as a gas leak or just a pile of loosely crumpled newspapers. Note a burning gas leak is a rapid burning fire, NOT an explosion. Huge example was the hydrogen filled Zeppelin, the Hindenburg, which had a leak when it attempted to dock at Lakehurst, N.J. during the thirties, a spark started a huge rapid fire and ended the era of hydrogen in balloons

Rapid Combustion:

A form of combustion , otherwise known as fire, in which large amounts of heat & light energy are released, which often results in a flame.

Example :-

♠️Burning of matchstick.

♠️Combustion of LPG.

Spontaneous combustion:

The ignition of a substance or body from the rapid oxidation of its own constituents without heat from any external source is known as spontaneous combustion.

Example:

♠️Phosphorous and sulphur start burning instantaneously; at room temperature.

♠️In coal mines, fire breaks out many a times because of combustion of coal dust.
