Proteins are biological molecules made of chains of amino acids. Multiple stands of DNA can be “recombined” in the lab and inserted into living cells to cause them to produce “recombinant proteins” that the cell would not normally make. These proteins may be novel or mimic naturally occurring proteins. The proteins might be used as pharmaceuticals, dyes, food additives or detergents.

The earliest pharmaceutical recombinant proteins were Epogen (Amgen) and recombinant insulin and human growth factor (Genentech). The top selling recombinant protein in 2016 was Humira (AbbVie) which sold $16 B.
