The two reactions occur simultaneously and they are known to be inseparable — as one atom loses an electron, the other gains an electron, hence completing the redox cycle.

When the reactions happen separately, they are known as half-reactions.

When the half-reaction equations are combined, the resultant equation is known as the redox equation.

Example:-

CuO + H2 → Cu +H2O.

In this redox reaction, CuO is getting reduced to Cu since Oxygen is getting removed.

Note:-

Oxidation reaction is defined as the reaction in which a substance looses its electrons. The oxidation state of the substance increases.

Reduction reaction is defined as the reaction in which a substance gains electrons. The oxidation state of the substance gets reduced.

Redox reactions are the reactions involving the oxidation of one substance and the reduction of the other .

for example H2s+Cl2->HCl+S.
