Answer:

Reduction is scientifically the gaining of electrons while oxidation is the losing of electrons. In simple words, if a compound is losing "oxygen" or gaining "hydrogen" it is a reduction reaction. If it gains "oxygen" or loses "hydrogen" it is oxidation reaction. When oxidation and reduction happen together, the reaction is called redox reaction. Example:

CuO + H2 = Cu + H2O

Here, CuO is reduced and H2 is oxidised
