Define reflection of light. Explain reflection of light with the help of an activity.
Answers
Reflection is when light bounces off an object. If the surface is smooth and shiny, like glass, water or polished metal, the light will reflect at the same angle as it hit the surface. This is called specular reflection.
Laws of Reflection
The laws of reflection determine the reflection of incident light rays on reflecting surfaces, like mirrors, smooth metal surfaces and clear water. Let’s consider a plane mirror as shown in the figure above. The law of reflection states that:
*The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane
*The angle of incidence = Angle of reflection

Activity to show reflection of light:
This activity should be done at night or in a dark room. Ask your friend to hold a mirror in his hand at one corner of the room. Stand at another comer with a torch in your hand. Cover the glass of torch with your fingers and switch it on. There should be small gap between your fingers. Direct the beam of torch-light on to the mirror that your friend is holding. Adjust the direction of torch so that patch of light falls on your friend standing in the room. This activity shows the reflection of light also that light travels in straight line.
