Refraction:- When light passes from one medium to another medium of different densities, the light rays changes it's direction at the point of incidence. This is called "Refraction".

Basic Definition :

Whenever a light ray travels from one medium to another, it is bound to deviate from its path due to change in its velocity. This phenomenon is called Refraction.

A quick FYI :

  • This deviation from its path is defined for all media and for all wavelengths and frequencies.
  • Whenever, a light ray travels from a denser medium to a rarer medium, it is bound to move away from the normal drawn at the point of incidence, and vice versa.
  • The ratio of speed of light in vacuum to speed of light in the medium gives us the Refractive Index(n) for that particular medium.
  • Refractive index for any medium is always greater than one(1). That is, n ≥ 1. And as a point of reference, Refractive Index for air is taken to be approximately one(1).
