The deviation offered to a ray of light when passed through a medium

adarsh183: and aditi
AditiGupta11: yeah
AditiGupta11: then can u tell us correct one.
adarsh183: can we say that the bending ability of mediam is known as refractive index
manasvini: no its not good English
adarsh183: ok
adarsh183: but my concept is write or wrong
manasvini: right but not good English
adarsh183: ok na
adarsh183: thanks for your ans

Refractive index is simply a number without unit...

To understand about Refractive index , You must know about the Refraction....

Refraction is a phenomena of light in which light when Passes through the transparent medium it bends.

Simply Refraction is a phenomena of light in which light bends.

This bending differs when light passes through the different medium or you can think it as different transparent medium like glar, Kerosene etc bends light differently....

This bending of light is a measurable quantity.
And so called Refrative index....

So different Transparent medium have different Refractive index.... Greater is the refractive index more is the bending of light by transparent medium and vice versa.
