Resonance is a physical phenomenon in which an external force or a vibrating system forces another system around it to vibrate with greater amplitude at a specified frequency of operation.
If the soldiers while crossing a suspended bridge march in steps, the frequency of the marching steps of soldiers may match with the natural frequency of oscillations of the suspended bridge..In this situation resonance will take place, then amplitude of the oscillations of the suspende bridge will increase enormously, which may cause the collapsing of the bridge..So to avoid this situation soldiers are advised to go out of steps on the suspended bridge..

a special case of forced vibration .
when the frequency of the externally applied periodic force on a body is equal to its natural frequency the body readily begins to vibrate with an increased amplitude is called resonance
the reason is that when soldiers March in steps each soldier exerts a periodic force in same phase and therefore the bridge executes forced vibration.
