The process in which the sulphide ore of a metal is heated in a the presence of excess of air to get the metal oxide is called roasting.
Ex- ZnS + Heat - ZnO + SO2
The process in which the carbonate ore is heated in the absence of air is called calcination.
Ex - ZnCO3+ Heat - ZnO + CO2
