rural development is the process of improving the quality of life and economic well-being of people living in rural areas,often relatively isolated and sparsely populated areas rural development has traditionally centered on the exploitation of land intensive natural resources such as agriculture and forestry.

Several schemes was started to bring about the development of rural areas. They include the National Food for Work Programme, the Community Development Programmes, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, etc. As their name suggest, many of these schemes aimed at providing employment for the rural poor.

Though the various five-year plans, the government has initiated a number of development programmes such as :

● Integrated Rural Development Programme

● Drought Prone Areas Programme

● Minimum Needs Programme

● Jawahar Rozgar Yojna

● Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana

● Indira Awass Yojana

● Rajiv Gandhi National Water Mission

● Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojna
