It means the separation of religion from political, economic, social and cultural aspects of life, religion being treated as a purely personal matter. The term “Secular” means being “separate” from religion or having no religious basis. It is the principle of separation of the state from religious institutions.

George Jacob Holyoake (13 April 1817 – 22 January 1906) was an English secularist, co-operator and newspaper editor. He coined the terms secularism in 1851 and "jingoism" in 1878.
