Shearing Modulus :

  • It is the ratio of shearing stress to shearing strain.
  • It is represented by G.
  • It is also called Modulus of rigidity.
  • SI unit is Nm^{-2} or Pa.
  • For most materials G approximately equal to Y/3.
  • The shear modulus is less than Young's modulus.

G = shearing stress/shearing strain

G = (F/A)/(∆x/L)

G = (F × L)(A × ∆x)

G = (F/A)/∅

G = F/(A/∅)

The other two types of modulus include :

  • Young's modulus
  • Bulk modulus

Young's modulus is the ratio of tensile or compressive stress to the tensile or compressive strain.

Bulk modulus is the ratio of hydraulic stress to volume strain.
