when the deforming forces are such that there is a change in the shape of the body then the strain produced in the body is called shear strain.

actually, shearing strain is the ratio of relative displacement of any layer to its perpendicular displacement from fixed layer .

mathematically, tan\theta=\frac{x}{h}

unchanged . Then , the body is said to be 'sheared' . The ratio of the displacement of a layer in the direction of the tangential force and the distance of that layer from the fixed surface is called the 'shearing strain' .
