Answer

SHM (Simple Harmonic motion) is defined as the motion of a particle which moves two and fro along a straight line in which acceleration is directly proportional to displacement and is always directed opposite to displacement.

  • A - y

Examples :

  1. Oscillation of simple pendulum with small amplitude, vibration of strings in musical instrument.
  2. Oscillation of a balance wheel in wrist watch.
  3. Oscillation in torsional pendulam.

Characteristics of Simple Harmonic motion :

\bigstar The motion of a body is periodic.

\bigstar Acceleration is always directed towards equilibrium position.

\bigstar The motion of the body is to and fro along a straight line about mean position.

\bigstar Acceleration of a body is directly proportional to displacement of body.
