This is a complex issue:

Many societies did not know slavery as a system, in fact, enslaving societies have been minoritarian in all history. Some enslaving societies did have a range of institutions similar to slavery, like very restrictive forms of serfdom i.e. Russia until 1917, or some kind of state bondage, just for prisoners or convicted peoples like Ancient Egypt or present EEUU. Other societies succeeded in abolishing slavery for certain periods but it was reintegrated, like some kingdoms in China. A few bunch of societies did abolish slavery but they didn’t exist anymore or were absorbed by some societies like Ragusa in Croatia. Many countries have formally banned Slavery but still are very tolerant towards it, like India or Mauritania.

Lithuania was the first known European country to abolish slavery in 1588, although serfdom continued till 1861.

The first Asian country, existing today to ban both slave-trade and slavery in a permanent way was Japan in 1590, but the specific form of serfdom there was very restrictive. Slavery existed on a large scale during World War II in areas of  China, Korea, and Indonesia occupied by Japan.

The kingdoms of Denmark-Norway where the first European countries to ban the slave trade in contemporary times in 1803, buy slavery itself continued until 1848.

Spain did sign some treaties with the United Kingdom abolishing Slave trade, (but not slavery) since 1811, and the most important one in 1821. It was a formal gesture of gratitude for the help of Britain in the Peninsular War against France. But the fact is that slave trade to Cuba and Puerto Rico was tolerated and even promoted by the Spanish crown until the very late final ban of slavery in 1886
