A socialist state, often known as a communist state, is a type of government which follows the ideals of Russian statesmen such as Lenin and Karl Marx or of Chinese revolutionary Mao Zedong. The ideologies of a socialist state, centred on the theme of a powerful working class, which could make their own decisions without having to work for the bourgeoisie or aristocracy.

Since the working class are considered the true power behind these governments, they are also known as Worker Parties.

This form of government is predominant in countries where the farmers and labourers are considered as the oppressed classes, such as in Russia (formerly the USSR), Cuba, Vietnam and China.

Nowadays, more countries are adopting a non-Leninist/ Marxist approach towards a socialist state.
