Computer system comprises of two main components Hardware (physical) and Software (non – physical) or set of instructions.

But do you know that as per requirement we have various types of computer hardware like for personal work we have PC or desktop computer, on the other side we have Super computer like ‘PARAM’ which is for complex and big calculation. Their hardware is also different. Similarly for different types of tasks we have separate software like System software, application software etc.

Software is the set of programs (instructions) that tell a computer what to do.

There are two types of software :

System software

Application software

Let’s learn a little more about the types of software.

System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. System software is of three main types :

Operating system

Language processor

Utility software

An application is any program, or group of programs, that is designed for the end user. Applications software (also called end-user programs) include such things as database programs, word processors, Web browsers and spreadsheets.
