Solar eclipse is a phenomenon where a portion of earth is engulfed by the shadow of moon as it covers the sun.This happens because the sun, moon, and earth are on the same alignment.

Total solar eclipses are rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path on the Earth's surface traced by the Moon's full shadow or umbra.

The small area where the umbra touches Earth's surface is where a total eclipse can be seen. The larger light gray area is the penumbra, in which a partial eclipse can be seen
