Define somatic hybridization give an example of a plant that is produced from somatic hybridization
Answers
Answer:
The process of fusion of protoplast of somatic cells derived from different varieties and or species of plants on a suitable nutrient medium to produce the somatic hybrids is called somatic hybridization. For example pomato is the somatic hybrid obtained by the protoplast fusion of tomato and potato.
What is somatic hybridisation?
If a hybrid is produced with fusion of two species/varieties somatic cells then this process of production of somatic hybrid is known as somatic hybridisation.
Some uses of somatic hybridisation:- It permits in the production of hybrids in between diferent lines and species that can not be produced normally by sexual reproduction like rice & Carrot
- Somatic hybrid between potato and tomato is pomato.
- While Bromato is a somatic hybrid of brinjal & tomato
Uses of somatic hybridisation:-
1. Very helpful for the gene transfer
2. For the production of useful allopolyploids.
3. In the transfer of cytoplasm.
