Stem structure:
The stem divides into nodes and internodes.The nodes give rise to the leaves and hold the buds which grow into branches. The internodes separate two nodes.
Internally , it contains three basic types of tissues:
- Dermal tissue
- Ground Tissue
- Vascular tissue
- All of which are made of simple cells.
Functions:
- Produce leaves, branches and flowers.
- Hold leaves up to the sun.
- Transport substances between roots and leaves.
- Primary Growth: cell division in apical meristem.
- Secondary Growth: growth in lateral meristems in conifers and dicots.
